Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL)

We believe that enriched outdoor play at recess supports student and staff well-being, improves student learning and achievement, and transforms school culture.

We are working to bring a comprehensive play strategy to schools across Canada to improve outdoor play experiences for all children.

Bringing OPAL to Canada

In 2016, EcoKids piloted Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) in six schools in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). First established in the United Kingdom, OPAL is recognized as a best practice for supporting school improvement through play – as cited in UK Government reports. OPAL was also winner of the Best European Active Schools programme in 2017. The program has grown to over 40 schools in three school boards in the GTA.

We currently support OPAL in K-8 schools in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and selected pilot schools in the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB).
